11 Indians on summit of Everest

Ten of the new Everest heroes are from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) Expedition 2009. They include soldiers on deputation from the Army as well as a woman climber, Kavita Budathoki, a 24-year-old from Uttarakhand, Krushnaa Patil, a 19-year old Pune girl, also summated Mt Everest becoming the first woman from Maharashtra to achieve the feat. The others include Naib Subedar Dinesh Singh Rawat, Naib Subedar Pratap Singh Bist, Naib Subedar Surinder Singh, Subedar Sital Singh, Inspector Love Raj Singh, Vishweshwar Prasad Semwal, Vinod Singh Gosain, Kushal Singh Rana and Dashrath Singh.

In 1959, six years after Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary had trodden where no one had gone before, the first all–Indian expedition to the 8,848m peak was led by Brigadier Gyan Singh, also a NIM principal, but failed due to bad weather. India had to wait till 1965 when Captain M.S Kohli put nine climbers on the top to hoist the tricolor.

In 1984, the fourth Indian expedition saw Bachendri Pal becoming the first Indian woman to claim the honor.
